Sitting on the chair and test drive
No single 'best ergonomic chair' that fits all body shapes and sizes. To improve the health of your back and the comfort level of your work, there are questions you should ask before determining how well the office chair fit you. Sit on the chair physically. Do not just check it out by looking at it. The term 'ergonomic' describes a minimum set of requirements that are to eliminate the unnecessary load on your body when you perform your job most effectively. "Ergonomic" does not mean a single product. It is like the term "organic" that is not a single product you can buy from your supermarket. You can only tell by physically sitting in an ergonomic chair and evalutate it yourself.
1. seat
The seat should be soft and comfortable under your hips and thighs and it should not be too big. There should be -inch gap between the back of your knees and the front of the seat when you sit down. Use the seat slide to for adjustment. Memory foam has been used in a lot of ergonomic chair seats. " Waterfall" seat is recommanded. The seat is to swivel smoothly and effortlessly to make sure that you won't have to twist your back to reach or to turn around.
2. Chairback
Does the chair provide sufficient support to your back? Look for a chair with a height-adjustable lumbar back support. It is advised that your back has the hot and cold gel pack to promote blood flow that supply nutrients contineously to your lumbar area. To snugly fit the curve of your unique proportion, check if the chair still fits your back either you sit upright or lean back. Avoid chairs with a static back. Look for an "active back' to allow you to easily move and recline in the chair. A lot of chairs provide a tension control for the seat back. There are also office chairs in the market that have automatic tension adjustment based on your body weight.
3. Chair controls
Avoid chairs with controls that are complicated. Look controls that can easily be reached when sitting in the office chair. Usually, there are some controls for adjustment of the height of the seat, the seat pan depth, the tension and the tilt.
4. Armrest
Not all chairs come with armrests. With armrests, it helps you to get in and out of a chair. Make sure the chair armrests are strong enough for your weight. Check if the chair has BIFMA standards which basically insure the chair will not tip when you push down on the armrests. Armrests are also useful for supporting your arm during prolonged hour of computer work. There are many different armrests in the market that you can easily adjust while sitting. You should be able to adjust armrest height, or armrest angle in and out, or armrest pad forwards or backwards.
5. Headrest.
The headrest helps to reduce strain on the neck and shoulders if you are reclining back in the chair.
6. Chair base with caster
5 pedestal base with casters that glide freely over the floor surface provides good stability.
Today there are many "ergonomic office chairs" to choose from. Ergonomic chairs offer features for alleviating many of the aches and pains associated with sedentary desk work. Ergonomic office chairs offer adjustments in height, depth, etc. to decrease the loads on the spine and other musculoskeletal structures. However, if budget is tight, some lumbar supports can be added to existing chairs to improve comfort.
Using a hot cold gel pack massaging lumbar support can improve spinal positioning in a chair and help promote active sitting with good blood flow. However, the best solutions of all is to get up and out of the chair in every 20 to 30 minutes and just take a break or walk around the desk once or twice. The disk in our spine is generally loaded with your body weight. By taking little breaks will reduce the spinal loads and give the disk the chance to unload.
