Control Muscle Fatigue Low Back Pain With A Comfortable Office Chair

Office furniture must be selected with utmost care. It is not worthy to sap your entire energy during the long working hours because of the bad chair you are sitting in your office.  You don’t want to be tired by the end of the day and leave no energy to spend with your family when you come back home after work. That is why it is important to buy ergonomic chairs and office equipment.

What is the word ergonomics?

Ergonomics is a huge field potentially incorporating many sciences.  Basically, almost every tool and object used by humans need to apply ergonomics. The basic idea is simple. Ergonomics is simply the application of science to the tools we use and the systems within which we work. The goals are the same across the board: to make our physical environment more comfortable and less stressful on the body, so as to improve efficiency with a high level of quality.

Many benefits await you with your ergonomics efforts. It may actually be a more beneficial for you and your overall performance than costly software and technological innovations investment. Especially if you have suffered lower back and hip pain.

People might mistaken ergonomics as a recent buzzword.  However, there is evidence that the Greeks were working on arranging their work spaces with better efficiency and safety as early as the 5th century BC. The word "ergonomics" first appeared in the mid-19th century.  Ergonomics, at that time, was applied to certain jobs such as coal mining and brick-laying.  People, then, want to determine what tools allowed a job to be done quickly and most productively.  Also, they want to eliminate certain steps of a task to speed up the work or at least to rearrange the process.

In general, ergonomics applied to office spaces today. Especially, when computers have become an integral part of every business organization today.  Computer users are most vulnerable to risks of acquiring cumulative trauma injuries or RSI  (work related upper limbs disorder). Professionals working on computers need ergonomic posture chairs which can support their back. If you spend a lot of time at home or at work planted in front of a computer, an ergonomic home chair or ergonomic posture chairs are an investment you might wish to consider. You may not realize that a chair which is wrong for your body can cause you fatigue and putting undue stress on your back, neck, and circulatory system.

In order to avoid developing upper back neck shoulder pain or low back pain disc degeneration from static sitting for prolonged hour, there have been manycomputer ergonomics articles done to determine the proper angle at which your hands should align when typing on a computer keyboard, or at how height for the armrests, or how to sit to maintain good posture while enjoy the comfort as well as good job performance.

We need to pay attention to safety guidelines for an ergonomic computer desk and seat arrangements. First of all, we want to keep the monitors at the eye level or slightly below (5 degree).  The desks should be conducive to this kind of arrangement. This will keep the users’ heads over their shoulders which is a good position for avoiding strain on the neck, back and shoulder. Ergonomic office chairs tractor style seat provides support to the body's overall weight.  And the chair-height can be adjusted for the individual's feet to step flat and comfortably on the floor.  You should position keyboards in a way that allows your wrists to remain straight.  Bending the wrists too much when doing repetitive tasks will increases pressure in the carpal tunnel, causing serious injuries. CTS(Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) is ranked the top injuries among other work-related injuries.

Lower back and hip pain can be caused or made worse by an uncomfortable sitting posture, especially if you spend a lot of time working at a desk or at a computer. To reduce pain to your lower back, sitting properly in your computer chair and investing in more comfortable computer chairs with massage if the one you currently use is not right for you.

The right computer chair should allow you to move and adjust your seated position freely as you work.   Here are some of the basic functions you need to look into:

  • glides effortlessly on 5 sets of castor wheels that are self-locking,
  • swivels smoothly
  • has a well-padded seat with memory foam in tractor style and backrest with the use of back support cushions in ergonomic chairs

An ergonomic chair should have the following

  • an adjustable seat-height and
  • an adjustable backrest tilt (office chairs ergonomic adjustable tilt lock).
  • an ergonomics posture-shaped backrest,
  • an adjustable seat-tilt and
  • an adjustable lower-back support (lumbar support).

Seek advice, and try the chair before you buy.  Before purchasing, ask for warranty from the manufacturer.

Talk to a chiropractor or other back-care specialist if you feel that your work chair may be contributing to your back problems.  If you feel that your chair is not helping your back to get better, consult your doctors as well.

There may be several office supplies stores located near you. Many office supplies companies sell office chairs and computer chairs as well as other office supplies such as desks and stationery etc. There are basically two types of office chairs: pre-assembled office chair and unassembled office chair. The pre-assembled office chair does not require any assembly. You simply put it at the desired place in your office. However, the unassembled chair needs to be assembled before you can use it. You could research office chair companies on the internet, including those that specialize in ergonomic back-care seating or medical office seating that provide back injury pain treatment.

Find a supplier that will take the time to discuss your specific needs and find the right chair for you based upon an assessment that your chiropractor or physiotherapist has carried out into your back problem.
